musicians and teachers almost as soon as he picked up a guitar.
He gave his first public performance
aged 11 and a year later performed his first full solo recital for
the Sheffield Music Society.
Simon
went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music and at the
Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where he won the
Principal's Guitar Prize. While still at the Guildhall, Simon was
spotted by Jose Tomas, Spain's most respected Professor of Guitar
and was subsequently invited to study with the Maestro in Alicante. Señor
Tomas subsequently said: "Simon is the finest pupil I have ever
had the good fortune to encounter". Simon has enjoyed a string of
competition successes including Sheffield Junior Young Musician of
the Year (1981 & 1982), Harrogate Music Festival (1982) and second
prize in the Domecq International Guitar Competition (1983) when
he was just 14. In 1984 he reached the National String Finals of
the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition.
